Digital Accessibility Open Office Hours — Presented on the fourth Thursday of every month
March Open Office Hour — Math Accessibility for Equitable Access in STEM — Thursday, March 27th from 1-2 pm ET

In this session, we will explore accessible math content creation. Accessible equations use mathematical language that can be recognized and read accurately by assistive technology. We will provide an overview of the mathematical languages MathML and LaTeX and share best practices for creating accessible equations using the tools MathType, EquatIO, and the Canvas equation editor. We will provide a table of Accessible Math Languages, Tools, & Outputs that can serve as a decision tree tool as you develop mathematical content for your courses.

Mel Rizzuto, Katherine Springer, and Sara Shunkwiler are instructional designers at Whiting School of Engineering’s Center for Teaching and Learning Design. They are frequent presenters on why math accessibility matters to equitable access for disabled students and working professionals in STEM. Together with Space Systems Engineering faculty, they have shared their journey at Whiting to create accessible and accurate math equations and create a culture of inclusion.
